1839 Forage cap – wheel hat

Starting at: $95.00

The 1839 forage cap or wheel hat, saw service from late 1839 up to the mid 1850’s. Made of dark blue wool, it features a vertical visor, tall headband and a stiff reed welting around the crown, an ear flap attached to the headband and held in place by the chin strap button and ribbon of cotton or silk.
Branch of service trim (colored band) may be added for additional cost, the trim is applied to the hat making it removable. Although originals hats show no evidence of having colored bands, I have found that a “regimental Band” was the only unit, documented, to have been authorized to wear the colored bands on their hats.
Officers version also available with polish cotton lining. See hat chooses below.

This item is individually made per order.

NOTE; New information about the 1839 forage cap has come to light. From the Center of Military History, it is of they're impression that, quote "while a few prototypes were made for trial, they never actually saw production and was never actually issued." so I will no longer be making the type II or III caps.

NOTE; My estimate time to complete and ship new orders is upwards of ABOUT 20 weeks, which I'm slowly chipping away at. I appreciate your business and thank you all for your patience. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions.
